Getting Help Over The Phone Or In Person

How Do You Replace Your Social Security Card?

The Social Security offices have mostly been closed to the public since March 2020 and it isn’t clear when they will fully reopen. Right now they are making limited in-person appointments but those are reserved for critical services that cant be completed online or over the phone.

In-person help for Social Security numbers are being limited to people who are at least 12 years old and are applying for their first Social Security number card and to those who need to update or correct information, such as their name, citizenship or date of birth, so they can apply for benefits or earn an income. If you believe you qualify for an in-person appointment, you can reach out to your local Social Security office. You can find the Social Security location nearest to you here. You will generally get your Social Security card replacement in about two weeks with an in-person visit.

You can also speak with someone over the phone if you have a question about getting a replacement card. The office locator provides the phone number for each office. Otherwise, you can call the national phone number at 1-800-772-1213.

How To Set Up A My Social Security Account

To set up a My Social Security account, go to the My Social Security web page.

To open the account, you must:

  • Have a valid email address
  • Have a Social Security number
  • Have a U.S. mailing address
  • Be at least 18 years of age

You can only create an account using your own personal information. You should not create an account using another person’s information or identity, even if you have that person’s written permission.

For example, you cannot create an account for another person:

  • With whom you have a business relationship
  • For whom you are a representative payee
  • For whom you are an appointed representative

You can request a replacement Social Security card online if you are a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address. You must also have a driver’s license or a state-issued identification card from one of the states listed above.

If you do not meet these requirements, print out the application and take it, along with the original documents you need, to your local SSA office. The online application site will link to a page where you can find the closest SSA office in your area. You can also submit your application using an online form, provided you meet certain criteria outlined below.

Make Sure Your Information Is Accurate

This last step is easy to overlook, but its important you check in with SSA that your SS-5 application was completed successfully and processed correctly so your replacement Social Security is accurate and valid.

You can confirm the process went as planned by calling your local Hawaii SSA office.

Keep in mind that the SS-5 is also useful if you want to update existing information attached to your Social Security number. The most common reason for updating is a name change.

When you receive your replacement Social Security card, the ID document you submitted will be returned to you.

All of these steps are simple and routine. The SSA processes thousands of applications for new and updated Social Security cards each day and have it down to a science.

If you download and fill out the correct form, provide the right ID, and mail or take your completed paperwork to the SSA, you will be well on your way to a replacement Social Security card. Last, dont forget to check in with SSA to ensure the information you gave was processed accurately.

Depending on your circumstances, you can take or mail your application and evidentiary documents to your local Social Security office. First-time applicants age 12 or older must apply in person at a Social Security office while all others may mail their application materials. Be sure to take or mail the originals or certified copies of your supporting documents along with the form. They will return your original documents right away.

How To Request A Social Security Card Replacement

If all you need is a replacement Social Security card, with no other changes, you can simply request a new card online at the Social Security website. You’ll need to be a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address and will have to supply information from a drivers license or state-issued identification card from a participating state or the District of Columbia.

Currently, every state but Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and West Virginia participates in this program. If you’re from Alaska, Delaware, and Wisconsin, note that Social Security will only accept a driver’s license.

This service is not yet available to people whose drivers license or identification card was issued by a U.S. territory, such as Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Submit Your Replacement Card Application To The Social Security Administration

After filling in all sections of the SS-5 application and collecting the right ID , the next step is to take or mail the application plus ID to the Social Security Office. The most direct route is to go in for a face-to-face meeting, but this will usually mean waiting in the lobby.

Be sure to make copies of documents beforehand, for safekeeping.

Some Hawaii residents especially those in no rush chose to mail the application and proof of ID to the SSA office instead. This route means a wait of 10 to 14 days before receiving a replacement Social Security card. Be sure to include your return U.S. mailing address.

Others prefer the face-to-face option because they receive their ID back immediately. Again, this may require a wait of several hours but if you need a replacement card quickly, this is the way to go.

Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, in-person services can be more of a problem in some states. If you arent sure where to submit the form, check the website for instructions.

Can You Get A Same

How to Apply Social Security Card and Fill out the Form Requirements

So, is there a Social Security card center where you can receive a replacement card the same day? The short answer is no. The fastest way to receive your replacement card is by requesting it online if you are eligible. If you live in any state other than Alaska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, or West Virginia, then you can request your replacement online. You should receive your new card in the mail within 14 days.

However, there might be instances where you need your card immediately. While you cannot get a replacement card the same day, you can get a document that will sometimes work in a pinch. If you submit your application for a new card in person, then you can get a receipt showing that your application has been submitted. In some cases, this will suffice as evidence of a temporary Social Security card. However, not everyone will accept this receipt. If the agency requesting your card will not accept the receipt in its place, then you will have to wait until you get your new card in the mail to conduct your business.

Visit Your Local Ssa Office

Next, you will need to head down to your local Social Security office with your original documents to submit your application. Make sure that you make an appointment first, as walk-ins are not being accepted at most office locations at this time. In many states, you can submit your application completely online without visiting the Social Security office as long as you have a U.S. mailing address and are not making any changes to your card, like a name change.

Fill Out The Document Completely

You should provide information for every field on the form and documentation where needed. If you do not adhere to the guidelines, your application might be rejected. If you are a legal adult, you have to write your signature in the form. A parent or guardian must include their signature on their childs behalf.

This can include a , a court order approving the name change, a divorce decree or a Certificate of Naturalization.

You may be able to get away with sending the Social Security Administration just one document if it shows your previous name and your age, birth date or your parents names. This information then must match your Social Security records.

Again, any documents you mail to the Social Security Administration will be sent back to you.

Other Reactions From Online Applications

Furthermore, you will not be allowed to apply online if you got your identification card or drivers license from a U.S. territory. These include Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands or the Northern Mariana Islands.

As long as you are not requesting a change of your name to your card, and if you are 18 with a U.S. mailing address and have an I.D. card or drivers license issued from one of the many states or the District of Columbia, you can apply online.
