Why did Social Security Deny my Application for Benefits?

Date: December 22, 2020

The evidence you need to provide depends on a number of factors, including the type of benefit you applied for, your citizenship status, and what information may already be available in our records. When evidence is necessary we will contact you. In many cases, you may be able to mail-in the original evidence and we will return the documents to you as soon as possible. However, if you need to provide evidence that you cannot mail-in please let us know. We may be able to offer you an in-office appointment, depending on availability.

Maybe You Don’t Need Id

It may be possible to use your name change document as ID. This offers the convenience of mailing your application without surrendering your driver’s license, passport, etc.

This works by making sure your document:

Review the primary ID options if your name change document doesn’t qualify as ID.

1. Is recently established

You’ve crossed the biggest hurdle if your name change event took place within the past two years.

There’s no name change deadline. But waiting too long increases your burdenmailing ID and awaiting its return. Even then, alternative ID options exist.

2. Shows biographical information

Your name change document mustand shouldshow biographical data matching your current social security record:

  • Age
  • Parents’ names

Any of the above three details work, but nothing else.

3. Matches your current name on file

Your name change document must mention the name on your current social security card. So, were your name Jane Doe before changing, your document must show likewise.

Wait Patiently For Your Updated Social Security Card

Now that you have completed the form and provided all the documentation required, you can sit back and wait to receive your replacement card in the mail. If you completed the process at your local office, then you can expect to receive your new card in the mail in about 14 business days. You will also receive the documents you provided back in the mail as well.

If you mailed your application, you can expect the process to take about 4-6 weeks. If it goes longer than that, and you still have not received any information, then you can call the Social Security phone number at 800-772-1213 to check on the status of your request. Just remember to be patient as this office processes thousands of requests per day, and it will take some time for that new card to arrive.

Where To Mail A Social Security Application

Once you complete your form, you must send the document to the appropriate Social Security application mailing address. However, keep in mind that the address you must use is specific to your nearest SS office. You need to confirm that your local office receives your document. This is because there is not a general acceptance center that you mail your application into. If you need help finding a facility near you, use this sites Social Security office locator. Once you locate the agency, you can find its mailing address. If you have trouble locating an offices mailing address, remember you can always just go to the facility and submit your materials in person.

When To Get Started With Your Application

Keep in mind that even if you are working on getting all the documents you need for your application, you can still begin the application process. The timing of the application can have an impact on how much you receive in benefits. For example, waiting until the full retirement age to apply will allow you to receive full benefits. Filing before this age can lead to a decrease in your monthly payment amount.

If your full retirement age is 67, but you choose to receive benefits starting at 62, you could receive up to 30% less in monthly payments. Those who wait will receive larger payments and that amount will grow until you reach the age of 70.

However, remember that starting the process to get retirement benefits doesnt mean they will come immediately. Its recommended that you apply for benefits no later than two months before you want to start getting payments. All SSA retirement benefits are set up to be paid for the month prior. So, someone who applies in March might start getting benefits in April but wont be paid the amount until May.
