How To Tell Where You Were Born By Your Social Security Number

When the United States began issuing Social Security Numbers in 1936, it assigned certain number sequences to certain states. According to the Social Security Administration, this was mainly to keep their files organized, but it has had the unintended effect of associating people with certain locations. SSNs have never been assigned directly to note a person’s birthplace; before 1972, the number reflected the location of the office issuing the number, and since 1972, numbers have been assigned by the address written on the application. However, because most people now receive their SSNs as children, the numbers they are assigned quite often reveal the U.S. states in which they were born. Thus, although the method is not foolproof, you can reasonably determine your birth state by the first three numbers in your SSN.

Constitutional Challenges To Ssn Collection And Dissemination

United States Social Security : How to Get a New or ...

Constitutional challenges to the collection of social security numbers by government agencies have, for the most part, been unsuccessful. Thus, various courts have held that requiring an SSN on a driver’s license application is constitutional, as is the requirement that persons disclose their SSNs as a condition for receiving welfare benefits or food stamps. In cases where an individual’s SSN is publicly displayed or disseminated, court challenges in recent years have been more successful, particularly where fundamental rights such as the right to vote or the right to free speech are involved. With regard to the display of SSNs in online public records, or in cases involving requests for SSNs under federal or state open records statutes, the courts have attempted to balance the public’s interest in the transparency of government processes with the private individual’s interest in the confidentiality of personal identification and security information.

If You Are Adopting A Child

If the child you are adopting is a United States citizen, your child may have a Social Security number already. But if you are adopting domestically and your child does not have one, you can obtain an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number to claim child-related tax breaks while your child’s adoption is pending. To apply for one, complete IRS Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions. The ATIN will be valid for only two years, at which point you can extend it if your child’s adoption is still not final. Once the adoption is final, you must stop using the ATIN and get a Social Security number for your child following the process described above.

If you are adopting a child from another country, you will have to wait until the adoption is final and your child has entered the United States before you can obtain a Social Security number for your child. Once that happens, you can use the process described above.

What Is The Purpose Of A Social Security Number

Social Security Number Definition

A Social Security number is a unique nine-digit code thats used to identify you and track your earnings over the course of your lifetime. These numbers were first introduced in 1936 as a means of tracking earnings histories for U.S. workers. According to the Social Security Administration, more than 450 million Social Security numbers have been issued and there are more than 420 million numbers that are available for assignment.

Social Security numbers can be issued at birth by the Social Security Administration. They also are available to legal residents.Theyre printed on a paper card and mailed to you. Social Security numbers have three components:

  • Area Number: This is the first set of three digits.
  • Group Number:;This is the second set of two digits.
  • Serial Number:;This is the third set of four digits.

Your area number is assigned by your geographic region. This is based on the zip code thats used to apply for a Social Security number and doesnt necessarily represent where you were born or where you live.

The group number corresponds to your area number and can range from 01 to 99. These numbers are assigned on an odd/even basis. The serial number is a set of four digits ranging from 0001 to 9999.

Starting in 2011, the Social Security Administration opted to randomize Social Security number assignments. The most notable change is that the area number no longer has any geographic significance based on where you live.

The Area Number Prior To June 25 2011

If you were issued a social security card before 1972, your Area Number was tied to the state where your card was applied for. In the early days of card issuance, many adults applied for their social security at social security offices near where they worked. If not, then they tended to apply for them near their homes. Children tended to have their applications made on their behalf by their guardian. In 1972, Social Security centralized its operations, and until June 25, 2011, the Area Number tied to the zip code of the mailing address on the card application.

Accordingly, for anyone born between 1936 and 2011, the Area Number could fairly reliably indicate, at the very least, the persons birth state. And if you were born prior to June 25, 2011, you can see how your Area Number probably ties to where you were living as a baby, by checking this listing.

What Do The Numbers Mean

SSNs are not assigned consecutively; the first was not the lowest number, and the most recent is not the highest. They are assigned regionally and in batches.

The nine-digit SSN, which has been issued in more than 400 million different sequences, is divided into three parts: area numbers, group numbers and serial numbers.

  • Area numbers – The first three numbers originally represented the state in which a person first applied for a Social Security card. Numbers started in the northeast and moved westward. This meant that people on the east coast had the lowest numbers and those on the west coast had the highest. Since 1972, the SSA has assigned numbers and issued cards based on the ZIP code in the mailing address provided on the original application form. Since the applicant’s mailing address doesn’t have to be the same as his residence, his area number doesn’t necessarily represent the state in which he resides. For many of us who received our SSNs as infants, the area number indicates the state we were born in. You can find out which area numbers go with each state at Social Security Number Allocations.
  • Group numbers – These two middle digits, which range from 01 through 99, are simply used to break all the SSNs with the same area number into smaller blocks, which makes administration easier.
  • Serial numbers – Within each group designation, serial numbers — the last four digits in an SSN — run consecutively from 0001 through 9999.

How Can They Not Run Out

I’ve been doing a lot of work on my pilot article Service number and have this very simply question – how long can the SSA give new numbers? When you get right down to it, there are 999,999,999 possible numbers to issue. How many people have lived and died in the US since the 1930s? I think it would something like half to two thirds of a billion. Will the SSA ever run out of numbers? –OberRanks 03:30, 11 July 2009

See the earlier section #Numbers reissued/expire?, and Questions 19 and 20 in the provided link . As of January 2008, there have been 420 million numbers assigned and around 5.5 million new numbers are assigned each year. While this isn’t infinite, there are plenty of numbers for future use . I spoke to Social Security over the phone. Even though it is not legally required to have a SSN a US Citizen can not work without having a SSN. What is interesting is that you can own a business without having a SSN. The SSN is for a person only not a business. The IRS will provide you with a Tax ID for your business. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Patm1975 12:02, 27 April 2007 .Don’t be fooled by answers from the SSA. It is not against the law to work without a SSN. It is only required if both the employer and the employee agree to deduct SS payments for the employee’s SS account. No employer is required to collect for the SS but they are made to believe they must. No one is required to participate in SS so it would be discriminatory to require the number for employment.Deu4:2 Preceding unsigned comment added by Deu4:2 on 26 May 2008.
